Our Annual Retreat Was a Challenge
to a Deeper Resistance to War
“Be Faithful, Be Human”

Frida Berrigan reminded us that as peacemakers, what we are doing is good but still not enough. Fight the power? Resist the power might be more accurate. She spoke of our present administration as “The Architects of War.” The $3 to 5 trillion we will spend on an unwanted, unnecessary war. Our children and grandchildren will be saddled with that stifling debt for a trumped-up war based on false information. A 600-page document from the Department of Defense, proving no connection between Saddam Hussein and Al Quaeda and the infamous weapons of mass destruction. She shared the minute details for planning a war and the bombings which began March 19th.

“It was a full moon. This is no coincidence and nothing is left to chance.” Resist the power. Resist “Infinite Justice.” Resist “Mission Accomplished.” Stop the silence. Sobering thoughts.

Frida also brought the Lenten season to a close in a powerful analogy of the “shock and awe” campaign of the war in Iraq to the resurrection, and the reactions of those who first witnessed, who were truly in “shock then awe” of the risen Christ.

Today is another day, get up, do what you can, get on with it. “Each of us are candles, each of us are lights.” Let us try the option of love. Thank you, Frida.
