A Letter to the Philadelphia Inquirer

To the Editor:

I am not sure many people noticed, but the execution of Saddam Hussein proved once again the futility of using violence to end violence. Saddam would not have generated much of a hero status if he were to die of old age in a prison cell. Certainly not the martyred status he will receive from his past supporters for accepting death in a courageous manner while those present at his execution taunted, cursed, and ridiculed him.

For America to win the “War on Terror” we need to deal psychological blows to the enemy. Things like offering hope that they will be able to go to work, to the market, and send their children to school safely will eliminate far more terrorists than the most powerful bombs. “Thou shall not kill” is a commandment to which we all should
